The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) will host the first annual SWENext DesignLab at the Society of Women Engineers WE Local conference. During SWENext DesignLab, there is an awards program designed to recognize high school girls for their achievements in engineering and mentoring.
Sponsored by Northrop Grumman, this award is meant to get the Pittsburgh community involved in and excited about Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). The award is open to junior and senior high school students who are SWENext members in the greater Pittsburgh area.
Community Award Recipients will receive the following:
• SWENext DesignLab High School Community Award Trophy
• Participation in Community Award poster presentations
• Participation in the SWENext DesignLab event as an engineer’s assistant
• SWE Commemorative Shirt: ”This is what a future engineer looks like” and some goodies
• Recognition for their accomplishments during the WE Local WE Achieve awards banquet
• Each recipient will also receive $100 Amazon gift card
For this award, a poster and a video or essay must be submitted. The submitter must answer: How would you use STEM to improve Pittsburgh’s infrastructure to benefit both the environment and the people?
Award recipients will have an opportunity to present their posters to middle school girls, parents, educators and professional engineers at the SWENext DesignLab event. They will also participate in the DesignLab activity, working with a professional engineer to facilitate the hands-on activities for the middle school students during SWENext DesignLab.
