Before the holiday break in December, meetings were held with students in grades 10 and 11 who took the PSAT in October 2016. Students received their results and test books. They were then given information about the next steps they should take, including how to improve test scores. College Board (maker of the PSAT) has partnered with Khan Academy, the largest free testing website in the world, to offer FREE individualized SAT test preparation. Students must create accounts on College Board and Khan Academy and then download their scores. As they continue taking future PSAT and/or SAT tests, their scores will be downloaded to Khan Academy and their individualized practice will be updated to reflect areas of need. Please watch the brief videos (links below) to understand how to read score reports and how to improve results. These are the same videos that were shown to students.
Students who did not attend the meeting: please stop by the guidance office to pick up your scores and test books.
Students who did not take the PSAT: extra test booklets are available if you would like to familiarize yourself with the content.
Questions? Please contact your child's counselor.

My name is Jackie Welsh and I am from the University of Pittsburgh’s Society of Women Engineers (SWE) . I am currently our Women Engineers (WE) Local Conference Chair and I would like to inform you of an exciting opportunity for young women at your school.
SWE is a professional organization dedicated to the empowerment of women in STEM fields. SWE is composed of professional and collegiate members studying and practicing engineering as their careers. An exciting program for young women that SWE has to offer is SWE Next.
SWE Next is a program for women from ages 13-18 that offers its members access to scholarships, networking events, and contests. This year we are having an essay contest, the WE Local Pittsburgh Community Award. WE Local is a regional conference held by SWE in cities across the country. This year, one will be held in Pittsburgh, and another in San Jose. This is a poster and essay/video contest with a prompt about engineering in Pittsburgh. The winner will be awarded during our conference on February 17th-19th.
More information about SWE Next can be found here: http://societyofwomenengineers.swe.org/swenext
And this is the link to the application:
Thank you so much and I wish you the best in the new year.

Please see the exciting information from Magee-Women's Research Institute!
Dear High School Counselor and/or Science Teacher,
We are pleased to announce the Magee-Womens Research Institute (MWRI) 2017 Summer Internship Program for High School Students. Our new website is:
This program provides current high school juniors and seniors with the opportunity to participate in basic science or clinical research projects with the goal of interesting students in biomedical research as a potential career.
Application is open to all high school students interested in learning about biomedical research. We typically focus on selecting applications from students in their junior year. Our previous experience has found that the summer after the junior year is an ideal time to provide students with exposure to biomedical research. They have had adequate background in math and science, and are likely seeking experiences to help in decisions regarding interests for college. High school seniors are eligible to apply and participate in the program in the summer immediately following graduation.
During the 4-week program each student has the opportunity to work on his or her own research project under the guidance of an investigator and their staff. The start and end dates of the program are flexible (between June and August) and are coordinated between the investigator and the student. At the end of the program the students present their research findings via a PowerPoint presentation to the other participants as well as the MWRI faculty and staff at the annual High School Internship Presentation Day.
We will accept applications from January 1, 2017 through March 31, 2017. All documents must be provided by the deadline in order for the application to be considered by the review committee.
The student application process:
The website is: https://www.pittsource.com/postings/110135
Students are directed to the University of Pittsburgh PittSource job posting website and should follow the instructions to “apply” for the Magee-Womens Research Institute High School Summer Internship Program. The application form is completed online. The students are required to attach/upload a cover letter with their personal statement.
The accompanying cover letter must include:
* A one-page compelling cover letter/personal statement. We are looking for a personal statement that conveys something special, unique, distinctive, and/or impressive about the student or their life story, and why they are interested in biomedical research and participation in our program.
* Be sure to identify which area(s) of research performed at MWRI you are most interested in participating and indicate if you have a preference of basic science or clinical research.
* Include your school name and current grade in the letter.
* For references, name the two teachers that will complete your recommendation letters.
Additional supporting documents must be emailed directly to the program coordinator from the provider (not the student) at MWRHighSchoolInternships@mwri.magee.edu<mailto:MWRHighSchoolInternships@mwri.magee.edu>
* A minimum of two letters of recommendation, preferably from science teacher(s) and/or guidance counselor(s). The recommendation form OR letter of recommendation are both acceptable
* Referees should comment on academic and personal details including outside activities, if possible.
* A copy of the student’s high school transcripts.
* Email your documents to MWRHighSchoolInternships@mwri.magee.edu<mailto:MWRHighSchoolInternships@mwri.magee.edu> with the student’s name in the subject line.
* Or send the hardcopy recommendation letter/form and/or student transcripts directly to Mrs. Janet Hahalyak Weckerle @ 204 Craft Avenue, Room B408, Pittsburgh, PA 15213.
A copy of the recommendation form is attached with this email.
Since its inception in 1995 over 212 students have successfully completed the program. Please encourage your students who have science or biomedical related interests to apply. As in previous years, we anticipate the 2017 program to be highly competitive and less than 10 percent of the students who apply are chosen. (We typically receive over 100 applications.)
If you have any additional questions, please contact the program coordinator via MWRHighSchoolInternships@mwri.magee.edu<mailto:MWRHighSchoolInternships@mwri.magee.edu>
