Dear Baldwin-Whitehall Graduates of 2018 and Families,
I am very excited and honored to be able to present to you, for the very first time, information regarding the Gertrude F. Weinert Memorial Scholarship.
Robert E and Gertrude F. Weinert lived in Whitehall. Due to their extreme generosity, a trust in the amount of nearly $3 million has been established for the benefit of supporting graduates of Baldwin High School in their pursuit of higher education. The required minimum annual distribution (RMD) from the trust is nearly $135,000 for 2018. Based upon the requirements of the trust, the total RMD will be distributed to several students, with no exact minimum or maximum numbers.
Basically, we will need to evaluate all applications and rank order them. The highest ranked students have the ability to have the remaining cost of their tuition covered in full. The process will include both an internal review team as well as consideration from PNC Bank, the holder of the trust. This is an incredible opportunity for deserving students to receive assistance in the cost of higher education.
Students must be enrolled in a 4 year college or university. The scholarship covers only tuition, books and laboratory fees. Room and board is not included. Once awarded, the scholarship is renewable for four (4) years as long as the student meets the criteria of maintaining a full "B" average throughout their college/university experience. Overall student financial need is a significant factor in determining scholarship eligibility.
Students interesting in applying should download the attached application document and complete it in its entirety. Attach additional sheets as required and necessary. Completed applications must be returned to the Superintendent's Office at 4900 Curry Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15236 either in person between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. or via certified mail no later than JULY 2, 2018. Applications received after this date will be automatically placed at the bottom of the list and considered only after all other awards have been granted.
The District was made aware of this trust in mid May and has been working alongside PNC to move it forward in a timely manner for this school year. If you have any questions, please contact my office directly and I will work to find out any answers as we all work through the process for the first time.
